Dimitrov Explains Reasons For Nightmare Season

Grigor Dimitrov says a catalogue of issues have hampered him this season as he looks to regain his confidence. Dimitrov’s campaign started off in positive fashion with a run to the quarter-finals of the Brisbane International, but that display Down Under has been the pinnacle of his campaign to date.

The Bulgarian has failed to reach the last-eight stage of any other tournament while he suffered first-round exits at the Madrid Open, Italian Open, Queen’s, Wimbledon and Atlanta Open. His latest defeat in the US was to world number 405 Kevin King, capping off what has been a dreadful year, and Dimitrov revealed an arm problem has been partly to blame for his performances.

“In tennis, there are many key factors and if you do not have the right mentality, winning doesn’t get any easier,” he said in an interview with Milenio. “The arm issue stopped me, over the last six months it bothered me a lot. I had to change my racket and it’s never easy to get used to it.

“It takes time and it’s normal to lose confidence and game, I have to come back but it’s something emotional for me. It cannot get any worse, I am doing better and I think I am heading in the right direction.”
