Djokovic Wary Of Shapovalov Threat

Novak Djokovic says he is expecting Denis Shapovalov to play with his usual aggression in their Australian Open third-round clash.

The top seed, who is seeking a record seventh title in Melbourne, eased past Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3 7-5 6-4 in just over two hours on Thursday and now faces the fiery Canadian.

Shapovalov is yet to drop a set in the opening Grand Slam of the season, brushing past both Pablo Andujar and Taro Daniel.

The 19-year-old has played with his usual exuberance but his aggressive style is likely to provide Djokovic with the chance to open up after the Serb conceded he felt nervous ahead of his match against Tsonga due to the Frenchman’s pedigree.

With 14 Grand Slams to his name, the world number one has seen it all and is bracing himself for an uncertain evening against his unpredictable opponent.

“He’s very pumped,” said Djokovic about Shapovalov. “He brings a lot of energy to the court which is great to see. I expect a really interesting encounter.

“He will not have anything really to lose, so I’m sure he’s going to come out really pumped.”

Thursday’s action also saw a win for Alex Zverev, who fought his way past Australian wildcard Alex Bolt 7-6 6-4 5-7 6-7 6-1, while Kei Nishikori edged out Ivo Karlovic 6-3 7-6 5-7 5-7 7-6.

Meanwhile, Milos Raonic defeated Stan Wawrinka in four sets while Dominic Thiem was forced to retire injured against Alexei Popyrin.
