Do Napoli Have What It Takes To Win The Champions League?

Napoli got their Champions League campaign off to a strong start with a 2-0 win over Liverpool, leading Jurgen Klopp to claim they can go all the way.

Carlo Ancelotti was happy to take the compliment from his Liverpool counterpart, but was quick to play down expectations and rightly pointed out that it is still very early days.

The experienced Italian coach has been there and done it and who knows, with him in charge, anything could be possible, but it would be a huge upset.

There is usually one surprise package that upsets the form book and goes a long way in the competition. Last season we had two in the form of Ajax and Tottenham. Who is to say that this season won’t be the turn of the Serie A side.

Napoli do have a side packed full of quality and strengthened well over the summer with a number of shrewd signings.

Whether the squad is big enough and good enough to compete on all fronts is a big question mark though and only time will tell.

You get the impression that winning the Scudetto in Serie A is the main aim of the season. Juventus have dominated for years, but the door is slightly open for Napoli to nip in and take the title this season, and that is sure to be the priority.

That is not to say they will not target both, but it could be a bridge too far and something would no doubt have to give at the end of a long hard season.

Napoli do have a solid defence as they proved in the victory over Liverpool last night, a defence that is marshalled by one of the best defenders in Europe, in Kalidou Koulibaly.

Hirving Lozano could also be a key addition and will add even more of an attacking threat following his big-money arrival from PSV Eindhoven in the summer.

Napoli also boast Dries Mertens, Lorenzo Insigne and Fabian Ruiz, so it is easy to see why Klopp believes they have the players to go all the way.

Klopp also pointed out that not always the best team goes on to win the Champions League and things have to fall your way.

As good as Napoli may be, you feel they would need a lot of luck to go all the way, but on the evidence of Tuesday night there is a chance they can make the latter stages and upset a few along the way.
