Dortmund Issue Reus Backing

Borussia Dortmund have backed captain Marco Reus over his feisty response to the side’s mentality being questioned. The 30-year-old was interviewed following BVB’s 2-2 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday and did not take kindly to a reporter suggesting the team’s lack of mental strength was behind them conceding a late goal at Commerzbank-Arena.

The forward, capped 43 times by Germany, gave an expletive-laden response and made it quite plain how angered he was at repeated questions about the mindset of the team.

He has been criticised in the media for making the TV companies use their ‘bleep’ machine a number of times, with suggestions the club should take punitive action.

However, director of sport Michael Zorc has come out fighting on Reus’s behalf and made it clear they are right behind the skipper. “You can write what you want. We have a clear position. Marco is our captain and will remain so – there is no reason to change anything,” he said.

Zorc was not the only man to defend the captain, with Dortmund team-mates Julian Brandt and Julian Weigl also taking to social media to show their support to the former Borussia Monchengladbach ace.

The Westfalenstadion outfit are back in action on Saturday evening, with Werder Bremen the visitors, and will be looking for three points to keep pace with table-topping RB Leipzig.

Head coach Lucien Favre also refused to condemn Reus and feels it is time to draw a line under the incident and target victory over Die Werderaner. “You can get upset that we lost two points, but we have to look forward now,” he said.
