Edmund forced out of French Open

Kyle Edmund’s French Open campaign came to a frustrating end after he was forced to retire from his second-round match with Pablo Cuevas.

The 24-year-old appeared to have finally put the injury and illness problems that had dogged his 2019 season behind him as he battled to an epic five-set first-round win over Jeremy Chardy at Roland Garros earlier this week.

However, that contest had clearly taken its toll as the British No.1 struggled through the first two sets of his meeting with Cuevas, the Argentine taking a 2-0 lead before Edmund called for the trainer.

Edmund, who was bidding to reach the third round of the French Open for a third successive year, was left shaking his header after a lengthy chat with the physician before shaking the hand of Cuevas with the scoreboard reading 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 2-1.

The exit of the 28th seed means Johanna Konta is the last Briton left standing in the singles in Paris, while Cuevas can look forward to a third-round meeting with last year’s runner-up Dominic Thiem.
