Edmund Upbeat Ahead Of Cuevas Test

Kyle Edmund says he is in confident mood ahead of his clash with Pablo Cuevas in the second round of the French Open on Thursday.

British number one Edmund is bidding to make it through to the third round at Roland Garros for the third successive year.

The 24-year-old has endured a frustrating start to 2019 due to injury and illness, but he battled his way past home favourite Jeremy Chardy in the first round on Tuesday, coming through 6-7 7-5 4-6 6-4 5-7 after four hours and 55 minutes on court.

Edmund is now expecting another tough match against Uruguayan Cuevas, who sits 17 places below him in the world rankings, and he feels his victory over Chardy shows he has the resilience to enjoy a good run in Paris this year. “Of course it’s a tough match,” Edmund said when asked about facing Cuevas.

“But I’ve just played a very tough match. I’m in a good place. I’ve shown I can play tough. I’ve just got to go out there and not really overthink it and just play.

My game is certainly good enough now to do damage. If Edmund does make it past Cuevas then he will take on either Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan or fourth seed Dominic Thiem for a place in the last-16.
