Emerson Allays Injury Fears

Chelsea defender Emerson has reassured supporters that the injury he picked up on international duty is not too serious. Emerson originally made the move to Stamford Bridge from Roma in January 2018 and was largely used as an understudy to Marcos Alonso during his first 18 months with Chelsea.

However, this season Emerson has been able to establish himself as the first-choice left-back under Frank Lampard. He has started all four of their Premier League games to date this term, while there is also talk of him signing a contract extension.

Emerson’s form at club level has also helped him force his way into Italy’s manager Roberto Mancini’s first-team picture and he started both of the Azzurri’s Euro 2020 qualifiers against Armenia and Finland over the international break.

The 25-year-old impressed to further underline his strong start to the season although he was forced off during the closing stages of Sunday’s victory over Finland after appearing to injure his hamstring challenging Finnish striker Teemu Pukki.

Chelsea’s fans would have been concerned when they saw Emerson limping off, but the former Santos star has now taken to social media to reassure supporters he has not done any serious damage. “Very important victory today guys,” he said. “Unfortunately I had a small injury, but it’s nothing serious. Let’s continue like this!”

Mancini was also quick to play down the significance of the injury by insisting Emerson was only replaced as a precautionary measure. “He stopped to ensure it didn’t get any worse,” the former Manchester City boss told reporters.

It remains to be seen whether Emerson will recover in time for Chelsea’s Premier League clash with Wolves at Molineux on Saturday.

The Blues head into that match languishing in the bottom half of the standings after collecting just five points from their opening four league games, while they suffered a 2-1 defeat in the corresponding fixture last season although Emerson did not feature in that contest.
