Emery Keeps Cech Waiting

Arsenal boss Unai Emery has yet to confirm whether Petr Cech will start tonight’s Europa League Final against Chelsea in Baku. The Arsenal goalkeeper will bring the curtain down on his illustrious career this summer, but it remains to be seen whether he will be handed a starting place this evening.

Cech has played in every knock-out game in the competition and Emery has suggested he will play some part. But how much, remains to be seen. “I want to tell the players the starting XI first, and I want to tell them on Wednesday,” Emery explained.

“I speak about Petr a lot but above all he is a great man and a great professional. His behaviour in his year with us has been amazing. “I want to do something important with him in his last match. This was my conversation with him – I told him ‘I want to do something important with you in the last moment in you career, playing or not playing’.”

Elsewhere, midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan decided against travelling due to his country Armenia’s dispute with Azerbaijan, and will play no part. Midfielder Aaron Ramsey (hamstring), right-back Hector Bellerin and defender Rob Holding (both knee) are out, but striker Danny Welbeck travelled with the squad after sustaining a broken ankle in November.
