England Set To Name Silverwood As Coach

The England and Wales Cricket Board are reportedly set to name Chris Silverwood as their new coach on Monday. Silverwood is currently the coach of England’s fast bowlers but is in pole position for a promotion to the top job to replace the outgoing Trevor Bayliss after impressing at the interview stage last week.

South African Gary Kirsten has also applied, but it appears that Silverwood has won the race to lead England. The ECB are looking for improvements in the Test format after England failed to win the Ashes, while the one-day format has never been stronger after the World Cup win in July.

Former Essex coach Silverwood is set to sign his contract in time to lead England for their tour of New Zealand, which starts later this month. Silverwood has enjoyed previous success in the past when he coached Essex to the County Championship in 2017, their first title in 25 years. He won six Test caps for England, and the Yorkshireman is said to be close to captain Joe Root, something the ECB wanted to capitalise on.
