England Suffer Huge Roy Blow

Jason Roy’s World Cup hopes are hanging in the balance after he was ruled out of England’s next two matches. Surrey star Roy pulled up while fielding in England’s eight-wicket victory over the West Indies on Friday and after further tests, it has been confirmed the opening batsman has suffered a hamstring tear.

The 28-year-old will now miss the clashes against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, which take place on Tuesday and Friday respectively, and he will be assessed on an “ongoing basis”. Roy’s absence is a huge blow for England as he has hit 315 runs in three innings in the tournament at an average of 71.66, including a superb 153 against Bangladesh.

The Durban-born star does have a recent history of hamstring injuries, having spent seven weeks on the sidelines earlier this year after encountering the same problem. However, it is slightly better news on captain Eoin Morgan, who was also forced off during that win over the Windies after suffering a back spasm, after England revealed he could play on Tuesday. The 32-year-old spasm has “settled down” and a decision will be made before the game.
