After that near miss, Pan kept his head this time around, recovering from a bogey on the 15th with a birdie on the 16th and parring in to sign for a 67. His total of 12-under was enough to beat off 2014 Hilton Head champion Matt Kuchar by a shot, as overnight leader and home favourite Dustin Johnson floundered to a closing 77 in front of the expectant locals in South Carolina.

Chinese Taipei’s Pam admitted afterwards that he used his experience at the Wyndham to his advantage, staying in the present rather than looking ahead. “It definitely changed my perception on the last couple of holes down the stretch of what I should do,” he told reporters. “The last three holes I would say I played really well here, a lot of good shots just because I told myself I need to focus on the details, the little things, and just stay in present. “And that’s something I didn’t do at Wyndham.”
