Federer Puts Backing Behind London

Roger Federer has placed his backing behind London’s bid to retain the season ending ATP Finals from 2021. London has hosted the season-ending event since 2009 but organisers are open to the idea of switching the venue from 2021.

Next week’s tournament will be the 10th time the world’s best players have travelled to the O2, and it’s understood up to 40 other cities will bid to take the competition from 2021.

Federer, who has failed to win at the capital’s indoor tournament since 2011, feels London has proven to be a strong host and is a big advocate for staying put.

“I don’t see a reason to change unless there’s a city that really wants it badly and is willing to come in and support the tour in a major way for years to come like we have seen in Shanghai or maybe also London in the beginning,” Federer said.

“It has been a winning formula here, I’ve enjoyed playing tennis in a city that knows tennis very well, that has a strong media following. It has been a good place for us players to showcase our talents to be honest.”
