Federer Sent Packing In New York

Roger Federer is out of the US Open after losing a thrilling quarter-final tie against unseeded Grigor Dimitrov on Wednesday. The 38-year-old won his fifth crown at Flushing Meadows in 2008 and has not advanced beyond the quarter-final stage since 2015.

Federer was heavily fancied to book his spot in the last four this year after being drawn against Dimitrov, who he has beaten on all seven of their previous meetings, but the veteran was hindered by a back injury. “I felt it the whole time, but I was able to play,” he said.

“I feel low. I’m disappointed it is over because I feel as I though I was playing well. “It is a missed opportunity. I thought if I could get through I’d have two days off after.”

Dimitrov had never made it beyond the fourth round at the US Open prior to this year’s event, while he has only featured in two Grand Slam semi-finals since making his debut at Wimbledon in 2009. The Bulgarian won 3-6 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-2 and will take on Daniil Medvedev in the last four on Friday.
