Flanagan Takes Early Victoria Lead

Nick Flanagan surged to the top of the ISPS Handa Vic Open leaderboard after carding a superb 10-under-par 62 on day one.

The 34-year-old Australian, who started the tournament on the Creek Course, made eight birdies, two eagles and two bogeys to match the lowest opening round of the season.

Home favourite Flanagan was only one shot shy of the course record and is hopeful of continuing his form for the rest of the event, as he eyes a full European Tour card. “I would love to play in Europe,” he said.

“I feel like the European Tour suits my game, courses like this and just a little bit of different golf to some of the golf I’ve been playing for the last two or three years.”

Starting out on the Beach Course, Chile’s Hugo Leon, Englishman Callum Shinkwin, New Zealander James Anstiss and Australian James Nitties, who made a world record-equalling nine birdies in a row, all matched the course record after signing for eight-under-par rounds of 64.

The quartet are joined in second place by Australian Jason Scrivener and American Kurt Kitayama after the duo recorded the same score on the Creek Course.
