Foley Confirms Spears Move

Australia fly-half Bernard Foley has confirmed he will return to Japan to play for Kubota Spears after this year’s World Cup. The 30-year-old enjoyed 12 months in Japan in 2015 after he played 10 matches for Ricoh Black Rams. Foley, who is currently in Japan as part of Australia’s World Cup squad, will now return in time for the 2020 campaign, which starts in January.

Foley has decided to leave Super Rugby side Waratahs after an eight-year association and admits he is excited about the switch. “I am very happy that I am joining Kubota Spears,” Foley said. “Kubota Spears is a team which not only has been getting good results, but also is full of enthusiasm to be better and stronger.

“I appreciate that I was given an opportunity to play in Japan again. Rugby is becoming popular in Japan and I think the level of the Top League is the highest ever.” Foley is the latest big name to commit his future to a Japanese club, with compatriots Will Genia, Quade Cooper and David Pocock all set to play there in 2020.
