Froome Escapes Serious Injury

Team Sky’s Chris Froome appears to have avoided serious injury following nasty fall during the second stage of the Volta a Catalunya. The 33-year-old crashed inside the last 40km of the stage from Mataro to Sant Felie De Guixols, but still managed to get to his feet and complete the stage which was won by Australian Michael Matthews.

Matthews, who rides for Team Sunweb, beat world champion Alejandro Valverde from Movistar in an uphill sprint, while Daryl Impsey came in third. The Volta a Catalunya is Froome’s first event since the Tour of Colombia in February, and he is lucky to have avoided any serious damage.

“Someone hit Froomey and he slid and crashed. We’ll monitor him but it seems he is OK,” said Sky’s sports director Nicolas Portal. “It was a tricky corner which had a few roadworks on the right and was also quite bumpy.” Froome did not attempt to rejoin the peloton after the crash and came in some 13 minutes after Matthews.

Belgium’s Thomas de Gendt, who rides for Lotto-Soudal, currently leads the general classification, 2 minutes and 47 seconds ahead of Valverde, with Matthews a further second away in third.
