Marseille boss Rudi Garcia has revealed that signing Mario Balotelli this summer was never one of the club’s main priorities. L’OM were heavily linked with a move for the Italy international throughout the transfer window and they are believed to have had one bid rejected for his services by Nice.
A fresh bid was never lodged for Balotelli, who has ultimately remained with Nice, and Marseille instead used the money they saved to strengthen their midfield with the signing of Dutch international Kevin Strootman from Roma.
Garcia has now confirmed that bringing in a forward like Balotelli had never been one of his main priorities and he is much happier to have been able to strengthen his ranks in the middle of the park.
“These things happen on the transfer market,” Garcia was quoted as saying in Il Messaggero. “I always said that signing a forward was not our priority. We scored 122 goals in 60 games last year. But we did need a midfielder and we’re extremely satisfied we got Strootman.”
Marseille have made an indifferent start to the new Ligue 1 season, collecting seven points from their opening four games, but they did gain a morale-boosting 3-2 victory at Monaco last time out.
