Garcia Waiting On Payet News

Rudi Garcia says Marseille may have to make do without Dimitri Payet for a while after he was taken off with a knee injury in Sunday’s win at Caen.

The 31-year-old was left on the bench for Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat St Etienne amidst speculation of a move to Chinese club Shanghai SIPG but got the nod at the Stade Michel d’Ornano.

However, he lasted just 26 minutes of the game, being replaced by Morgan Sansom after what seemed an innocuous collision with an opposition player.

Sansom went on to score the only goal of the game as Les Phoceens ended a run of nine games in all competitions without a win.

All the talk afterwards was about Payet though, with the Marseille fans having booed their skipper during the warm-up.

Speaking in the post-match press conference, Garcia admitted the situation looked uncertain.

He told reporters: “It’s a knee problem, he felt right away when the Caen player went down on him.

“I do not know, but the knee is never good.” Payet’s injury could now prevent any move away from the Stade Velodrome, although if he does want to pursue a move, time could be on his side with the country’s window remains open until February 28.

The Reunion-born star has previously moved in the winter, having forced his way out of West Ham to return to Marseille in 2017.
