Gauff Seals Place In World’s Top-100

Teenager Coco Gauff’s progress to the quarter-finals of the Linz Open will see her break into the world’s top 100 for the first time. The 15-year-old American rose to prominence in the summer when she became the youngest player in the Open era to reach the Wimbledon main draw and then defeated Venus Williams on the way to a last-16 place.

Gauff arrived in Austria having not played since losing to Naomi Osaka at the US Open and she only reached the main draw as a lucky loser after being defeated in a qualifying round. And, after Greek Maria Sakkari withdrew, she defeated Swiss Stefanie Vogele on Tuesday, before Ukrainian Kateryna Kozlova quit in Wednesday’s last-16 clash due to injury while trailing 6-4 4-6 0-2.

Gauff subsequently becomes the youngest player to reach a WTA quarter-final since Bulgarian Sesil Karatantcheva in January 2005. And, her success in Linz will see her climb to 94th in the rankings when they are updated next week.
