Gilbert Backs Novak To Eclipse Federer

Brad Gilbert is backing Novak Djokovic to surpass Roger Federer’s record tally of Grand Slam victories. The Swiss has won 20 major titles, but, at 37, is unlikely to add to his haul after diminishing returns after winning last year’s Australian Open.

Djokovic, in contrast, appears to be back in the ascendancy, winning the last three Grand Slams to take his tally to 15 and will look to hold all three when he heads to the French Open. Gilbert, who has coached players to seven Grand Slams and was once described by Andre Agassi as “the greatest coach of all time”.

The American believes at 31, the world number one still has time on his side as he looks to overtake Federer. “If I was a betting man, I’d say yes,” Gilbert told Express Sport. “He’s 31, he’s going to be a factor in the next ten Slams and you wouldn’t put it past him winning five or six of those. “But then how long has Federer got in him?”
