Guardiola Savours Hardest Fought Title

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City’s title win has been the most difficult of his career after retaining the Premier League. City were crowned champions on Sunday thanks to a 4-1 final day win over Brighton at the Amex Stadium, Sergio Aguero, Aymeric Laporte, Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan cancelling out Glenn Murray’s opener for the home side.

The Citizens finished the season on 98 points, two shy of their record-breaking total from the 2017/18 campaign, but still only reclaimed their title by a point having been pushed all the way by Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp’s men are the first team to reach the 90-point mark and not win the league, and Guardiola was full of praise for the Merseyside outfit for pushing his players all the way.

“We have to say congratulations to Liverpool and thank you so much – they pushed us to increase our standards,” he told Sky Sports. “It’s incredible, 98 points, to go back-to-back. We made the standard higher last season and Liverpool helped us – to win this title we had to win 14 in a row. We couldn’t lose one point. “It’s the toughest title we have won in all my career, by far.”
