Gunn Tips Saints For Fast Start

Goalkeeper Angus Gunn expects Southampton to make a strong start to the new Premier League season under Ralph Hasenhuttl. Former RB Leipzig boss Hasenhuttl was confirmed as Mark Hughes’ successor at St Mary’s Stadium in December and not only helped preserve the Saints’ top-flight status, he also restored the feel-good factor at the club.

One of the decisions Hasenhuttl made during his first few months in charge was to install England Under-21 international Gunn as his first-choice goalkeeper. The 23-year-old, who moved to the south coast from Manchester City in 2018, is looking forward to picking up where he left off during pre-season and is convinced Southampton can enjoy a strong start to the campaign.

“Because he [Hasenhuttl] came in halfway through the season, it was tough for him to implement fully the physical training that he likes,” Gunn was quoted as saying by the Daily Echo. “Every pre-season you go into, you are always dreading it.

“Once you get through it, you definitely reap the rewards and come the first game next season we will come flying out of the blocks. Unlike the last couple of seasons, we should start really well.” Southampton haven’t exactly been handed an easy start to the new season. They will begin with an away trip to Burnley, while their opening four home games are against Liverpool, Manchester United, Bournemouth and Chelsea.
