Arsenal could be ready to step up their interest in Manchester United defender Eric Bailly amid reports he will be sold in January. The Gunners are understood to be looking to sign a new central defender at the request of coach Unai Emery who has been deploying Rob Holding and Shkodran Mustafi at the heart of his defence recently.
The north Londoners brought in Sokratis Papastathopoulos during the summer but his game time has been restricted by injury of late, leaving Emery short of options.
Bailly has been mentioned in connection with Arsenal since October after falling out of favour at Old Trafford under Jose Mourinho, with the Ivorian’s last appearance coming in the 3-2 win over Newcastle last month when he was hauled off after 19 minutes.
The latest speculation suggests Mourinho is prepared to sanction Bailly’s sale in January and Arsenal could be one of the clubs willing to take on the 24-year-old.
Rivals Tottenham are also understood to be watching Bailly’s situation closely and they could have the edge over the Gunners should they be prepared to part with United target Toby Alderweireld whose contract is due to run out at the end of the season.
