Hafeez Stars As Pakistan Down Proteas

Mohammad Hafeez kept his nerve to hit an unbeaten 71 as Pakistan beat South Africa by five wickets in the first one-day international.

The Proteas opted to make first use of the Port Elizabeth pitch but, despite an unbeaten 108 by Hashim Amla, their total of 266-2 always looked a bit light.

Rassie van der Dussen made 93 but it took him 101 deliveries and there was not the necessary acceleration throughout the innings to nail down a challenging total.

Reeza Hendricks chipped in with 45 but needed 67 balls to do so, with Hasan Ali returning figures of 1-42 from 10 overs.

Imam ul-Haq anchored the Pakistan response with 86 at the top of the order while fellow opener Fakhar Zaman made 25.

Babar Azam scored 49 batting at three while Shadab Khan was there at the end unbeaten on 18 as the Asians took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Duanne Olivier took two wickets for the Proteas but was expensive, conceding 73 runs from 10 overs, and the sides will do it all again on Tuesday in Durban.
