World number one Simona Halep is a doubt for this month’s WTA Finals after it was revealed she has suffered a slipped disc. The 27-year-old was forced to retire during Sunday’s China Open first-round match against Ons Jabeur due to a back problem.
Tests have now revealed the extent of the injury and the Romania will need to spend some time away from the action.
The WTA Finals are scheduled to take place between October 21 and 28 in Singapore, with the French Open champion guaranteed her spot in the Far East.
However it remains to be seen if she can make it after Halep admitted there is no timescale for her return.
She tweeted: “Hi everyone, wanted to give you a quick update. I had an MRI on my back and found out I have a disk hernia. I will discuss with doctors in the next few days but hope to be back soon and will keep you updated. Thanks for all your support.”
Having reached three Grand Slam finals, Halep finally broke her duck when beating Sloane Stephens in the Roland Garros final.
