Hammers Close In On Another Portuguese Teen

West Ham are in advanced talks to sign Portuguese central defender Goncalo Cardoso from Boavista for a fee of just under £3million. Record newspaper state that the Portugal Under-21 international is set to fly to London on Monday to undergo a medical and put the finishing touches to a deal understood to be costing the Hammers £2.7m.

That will make the 18-year-old the club’s fifth summer signing after striker Sebastien Haller, attacking midfielder Pablo Fornals and goalkeepers Roberto and David Martin this summer.

Boavista have granted permission for the teenager to head to England and finalise the terms of a contract with the Premier League club. Cardoso, who was linked to Watford in February, made his senior debut for Boavista in October of last year and went on to make 18 appearances for the team, with 15 of them coming in league matches.

He has caught the eye of West Ham scouts with his performances at Portugal Under-19 level, where he has been capped 11 times already. Competition for places in Manuel Pellegrini’s defence looks set to increase with first-choice pair Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena already backed up by deputies Winston Reid and Angelo Ogbonna.
