Harlequins Lock Announces Retirement

Harlequins forward James Horwill says he will retire from professional rugby at the end of the season. The 33-year-old joined Harlequins in 2015 but his game-time has been restricted over the past two seasons due to injuries. Horwill previously turned out for Ballymore Tornadoes, Brisbane City and Queensland Reds in his homeland, while he won 62 caps for Australia.

He captained the Wallabies at the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand and admits calling time on his career was a tough decision to make. Horwill said: “Rugby has been a big part of my life for many years; never in my wildest dreams would I have envisaged the incredible journey it has taken me on.

“I’ve had the privilege and honour to not only play, but captain my state, country and club, Harlequins, on a number of occasions over my 14-year career. “Winning the Super Rugby title at the Queensland Reds and being asked to captain my country are just some of the moments I will look back and cherish for a lifetime.”
