Justin Holbrook was happy to see St Helens claim the League Leaders’ Shield but his main priority is to deliver Grand Final glory. Saints wrapped up the League Leaders’ Shield with two games to spare following last Friday’s 38-12 victory over Hull FC at the Totally Wicked Stadium and they will now round off the Super 8s with matches against Warrington Wolves and Castleford Tigers.
Holbrook believes that finishing top of the standings has underlined his side’s quality over a 30-game period, but he knows it will count for very little if they do not go on to win the Grand Final.
“It’s a good thing to be recognised as the most consistent side after 30 rounds,” Holbrook said. “It’s something that the players should be proud of and I’ve said a number of times that the main thing in our sport is getting to Old Trafford and winning the Grand Final. The League Leaders’ Shield is a bonus.”
St Helens last tasted Grand Final glory in 2014, having also finished top of the regular season standings that year and Holbrook is hoping history can repeat itself.
He added: “If you can pick up a trophy on the way and it is something to earn with a couple of games to go, it is a nice achievement but we all know we’re playing for Old Trafford.”
