Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg wants his team to wrap up fourth-place in the Constructors’ Championship standings in Abu Dhabi next week.
The French team hold a 24-point advantage over fifth-place Haas heading into the final race of the season at Yas Marina Circuit and, barring a huge turnaround, they look set to seal fourth position, which would represent their highest finish since 2008.
Hulkenberg, who is seventh in the Drivers’ Championship, is certainly confident Renault can achieve that feat, although he is refusing to take anything for granted. “The last couple of years Abu Dhabi has been the place where the season comes to an end, and again a lot will be decided,” Hulkenberg was quoted as saying by GP Blog.
“For the manufacturer’s, there is still a lot on the game, although it is a bit more comfortable than last year. Now we have something of a buffer. We know what to do, and we will also go for it.”
The 31-year-old, who will be partnered by Daniel Ricciardo at Renault next season, also looks set for his highest finish in the Drivers’ Championship standings since he came into Formula One in 2010. “Of course I would like to grab points to end this season in a good way since the rest of 2018 was already fine,” he added.
“We have become stronger during the year and would deserve to be fourth.”
