Madison Keys has booked her spot in the US Open quarter-finals after a comfortable straight-sets victory over Dominika Cibulkova. Last year’s runner-up broke twice in the first set and three times in the second to run out a 6-1 6-3 winner on Arthur Ashe.
It was an excellent display by the American world number 14 who will now play either Maria Sharapova or Carla Suarez Navarro in the quarter-finals.
Keys is still looking for her first Grand Slam title having lost to compatriot Sloane Stephens in the 2017 Flushing Meadows final and she was understandably delighted to get through to the last eight against an opponent who appeared up for the match.
“I am glad I got the win and can come out here again for another match. It’s always easier to be more energised when the person on the other side of the net is more energised than you can possibly be,” she said.
“She’s a good player and has done a lot in her career. It was about having to focus on first serves and waiting for the right ball. I had to move my feet and used the crowd in those tight moments.”
