Injury Forces Williams Out Of Miami Open

American legend Serena Williams has been forced to withdraw from the Miami Open after sustaining a knee injury. The 37-year-old was set to be playing Wang Qiang in the third round after seeing off Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson on Friday.

However, Wang will get a bye to the last 32 following Serena’s decision to pull out of the competition. Williams, who has only completed seven matches in 2019, admitted she was “disappointed” but hopes to return to the event in 2020.

“I hope to be back next year to play at this one-of-a-kind tournament in front of the incredible fans here in Miami,” Williams said. Meanwhile, world number one Naomi Osaka suffered a shock three-set defeat to Hsieh Su-wei in the third round, losing 4-6 7-6 (9-7) 6-3.
