Ireland have been hit by the news Dan Leavy will miss Ireland’s international against New Zealand on Saturday because of injury.
The 24-year-old flanker had been named in coach Joe Schmidt’s starting line-up for the Test against the reigning world champions, despite not being able to train fully on Thursday due to soreness on the back of last weekend’s 28-17 victory over Argentina in Dublin.
However, the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) confirmed on Friday that Leavy will be replaced in the XV after he failed a fitness test earlier on the morning.
A spokesman said: “Dan Leavy had a fitness test this morning and it was decided he was not 100 per cent, so he will miss the match due to general tightness.”
Leavy’s absence has paved the way for his Leinster team-mate Josh van der Flier to come into the side at openside with Jordi Murphy securing a place on the substitutes’ bench.
