Ireland Suffer Sexton Injury Blow

Ireland have reportedly suffered bad injury news ahead of the Rugby World Cup after Johnny Sexton dislocated his thumb. According to reports in his homeland, the fly-half suffered the injury during a training session late last month.

The injury should only rule him out for between four and six weeks, meaning he should be available to take part in Ireland’s warm-up match against Italy in Dublin on August 10. However, it means he will miss a large chunk of training in the build-up due to the hand problem and could be lacking match fitness going into the autumn.

After Italy, Ireland will have a one week break before facing England at Twickenham, ending their preparations with a game against Wales – playing both a home and away game against the reigning Six Nations champions.

Joe Schmidt will then name his final squad for the World Cup before they face Scotland on September 22 in their first group stage match. Joey Carbery, Jack Carty and Ross Byrne are likely to get a chance at No.10, whether Sexton is available or not as Schmidt considers his options at fly-half.
