Ireland To Monitor Injured Healy

Ireland boss Joe Schmidt says they will monitor Cian Healy but doesn’t feel his injury is anything to be concerned about. The prop was forced off in the latter stages of Ireland’s humiliating 57-15 defeat to England at Twickenham on Saturday.

They have already lost Joey Carbery to an ankle injury sustained in the warm-up clash with Italy and it’s not yet clear how long he will take to recover. However, Schmidt feels Healy will be back before Carbery as they look to be at full strength for their World Cup opener against Scotland on September 22. Schmidt told RTE: “Cian, his x-ray is normal but obviously there’s a bit more to look at with him spraining that ankle.

“He’s sore now but if we can keep the swelling down and get a decent look at it hopefully he’ll be back in a shorter time-frame than Joey [Carbery].” Schmidt was obviously disappointed to lose so heavily in the build-up to a major competition but insists warm-up games can throw up a few surprises.

He added: What really matters is in four weeks time,” said Schmidt. “You do get some disproportionate scores (in warm-ups), but we weren’t good enough today.”
