Angelique Kerber’s bid for a second US Open title ended on Saturday after a three-set loss to Dominika Cibulkova. World number four Kerber won the last Grand Slam of the season back in 2016 – beating Karolina Plískova in the final – and she had looked in good form during her first two matches in this year’s US Open.
The German ousted Margarita Gasparyan and Johanna Larsson in rounds one and two respectively, but the 30-year-old’s challenge came to a premature end against Cibulkova on Saturday.

Kerber, who triumphed at Wimbledon for the first time this summer to take her Grand Slam tally to three, broke three times in the first set but her Slovakian opponent repeated the feat in the second to take it to a decider.
Cibulkova then broke again twice in the final set to record a 3-6 6-3 6-3 victory, moving into the last-16 for the first time since 2010.
Elsewhere, two-time quarter-finalist Petra Kvitova lost 7-5 6-1 to in-form Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka.
Spanish 30th seed Suarez-Navarro will face Russian former champion Maria Sharapova in the last-16 after the Russian beat Latvian 10th seed Jelena Ostapenko 6-3 6-2.
