Klopp Admits To Alisson Surprise

Jurgen Klopp admits he has been surprised by just how good goalkeeper Alisson has been for Liverpool this season. Klopp made signing a new goalkeeper one of his main priorities last summer after both Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet failed to make the position their own.

The Reds certainly did not shy away from spending big – they paid a then world-record £65million to sign Alisson from Roma – a fee that was surpassed almost immediately when Chelsea brought in Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao.

Alisson has impressed during his short time at Anfield as he has helped solidify a defence that has only conceded eight goals in the Premier League this season – eight fewer than anyone else in the division.

Former Borussia Dortmund boss Klopp knew he was bringing in a top-class goalkeeper when he signed Alisson, but he admits even his own expectations have been exceeded.

When asked which Liverpool player has surprised him this season, Klopp told ESPN Brasil: “Well, maybe that Ali is such a good football player. “It was always very clear that he was a very influential player with the ball, but that he’s this good I didn’t see it, honestly – maybe because of a different style Roma played. That was a little bit of a surprise – and a very nice surprise.”
