Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has praised “fantastic” summer signing Xherdan Shaqiri but believes he can get even better at Anfield. Shaqiri scored his second goal of the season in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Fulham as his contribution to the Reds’ cause was again underlined.
Since joining from Stoke for a relatively cut-price £13million in the summer following the Potters’ relegation, Shaqiri has had to be patient but, once given his chance on a regular basis in recent weeks, has proved to be a key man.
The Switzerland international has only managed three Premier League starts, although he has come off the bench on five other occasions, but also has two assists to add to his couple of goals and Klopp is pleased with his progress.
The Liverpool boss, when asked if he had lived up to expectations, replied: “Yeah, or even more. What can I say? “He’s just a fantastic boy on top, that’s really good, and he knows that he has so much potential still to improve.”
Shaqiri appears to be the creative spark the Reds have been lacking in midfield since Philippe Coutinho departed nearly a year ago and Klopp knows he can be the difference-maker in the final third.
He added on the club’s website: “Of course he’s the guy for decisive moments, that’s how it is, and we have to make sure that it stays like this. Another really good performance and a fantastic goal on top (against Fulham), so it’s really cool.”
