India have rested skipper Virat Kohli for the upcoming Asia Cup, with Rohit Sharma taking the captain’s armband for the UAE tournament. Kohli is currently leading the India Test team in an intriguing series with England but has been battling a back injury.
It has not stopped him scoring heavily on the tour but the country’s cricket board have decided that the brilliant batsman needs to be given some time off to ensure he is fit for future series.
The Asia Cup gets underway on September 15, with India joined by Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and one nation from the qualifying event.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India released a statement on the issue and made it clear everyone was in agreement with the decision.
“The committee in consultation with the team management took a unanimous decision to rest Virat Kohli for the tournament” it read. “Rohit Sharma will lead the side, while Shikhar Dhawan has been named vice-captain.”
India have been placed in Group A alongside Pakistan and a qualifier.
