Midfielder Koke admits the Atletico Madrid players were not prepared for their indifferent start to the season. Los Rojiblancos kicked off proceedings by beating city rival Real Madrid 4-2 on August 15 to lift the European Super Cup and it seemed as though it would be the catalyst for a strong few months.
However, Diego Simeone’s side were held to draws by Valencia and Eibar in La Liga while losing 2-0 to Celta Vigo to sit among the also-rans.
Los Colchoneros have now hit back by taking all three points away at Monaco in the Champions League while they notched a 2-0 victory at Getafe on Sunday.
The capital outfit sit fifth in the standings and with them looking back on track, Koke sees their momentum building after a below-par few weeks.
“It has taken us aback somewhat, we did not expect it,” he told reporters. “We set our aims and ambitions very high so it was a little unexpected, but we know all about hard work and knowing what it takes to overcome this.
“Now we are winning games, in the Champions League and La Liga, and we believe more results will come as we generate momentum.
“There are still many things we have to improve in our game but the important thing now is to get results and improvements will follow.”
