Kooyong Classic Outing For Del Potro

Juan Martin Del Potro will conclude his Australian Open preparations by making his third appearance in the Kooyong Classic in January. The 30-year-old Argentinian has enjoyed a renaissance in 2018 with the highlight of the year being his first Masters 1000 tournament success of his career in the BNP Paribas Open, which helped to propel him back up to third in the world rankings.

Del Potro also reached the second Grand Slam final of his career at the US Open – nine years after winning the title at Flushing Meadows – but lost out to Novak Djokovic at Flushing Meadows.

But a knee injury suffered at the Shanghai Masters ended his hopes of playing in a first end-of-season ATP Finals event at London’s O2 Arena since 2013.

The current world number five is now looking ahead to 2019 and it has been confirmed that he will feature in the Kooyong Classic, five years after his last appearance when he lost to Lleyton Hewitt in the final, as he steps up his preparations for the Australian Open which gets under way a week later.

Kooyong Tournament Director Peter Johnston said: “‘Delpo’ is a big signing for us as he has not been seen too much in Melbourne because of his injuries. He’s a heavyweight in the men’s game and, despite his injuries, he’s built an amazing record. “He’s an incredible talent.”
