Lawrie Reveals ‘Mental Battle’

Paul Lawrie says it has been mentally challenging as he prepares to make his comeback from injury.

Eight-time European Tour winner Lawrie has been out of action for the past eight months after having surgery on a foot problem last summer before then being hampered by a niggling back issue.

The 50-year-old, who is eligible for the Seniors Tour, is back to full fitness now and is set to make his first appearance since April at next week’s tournament in Oman.

However, although feeling physically fit, the 1999 Open champion says he has been battling mental demons during his recovery. “Physically my foot is 100%.

I’m getting there,” Lawrie was quoted as saying by BBC Sport. “The injury is good. The foot has been brilliant. I have had a little problem with the confidence of going on to my foot.

“Not because it’s not ready, but just because I’ve had an operation and mentally I’ve been backing out of it when I play. It’s been a mental battle more than anything else.

My back is not great because I’ve not played a lot of golf. “So I will play in Oman next week, then Qatar, and see where we are then.”
