Lloris Confident Tottenham Can Challenge Once Again

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris says his side can still compete for silverware in Europe, despite not ‘being built’ to win the Champions League. The north London club reached the final of the competition last season, only to lose to Liverpool in Madrid.

Goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi ensured Spurs left Spain with nothing, but they earned plenty of plaudits for going all the way last season.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men were handed a tough group 12 months ago, having drawn Inter Milan, Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven.

Spurs managed to pick up eight points before then overcoming Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Ajax on their way to the final.

Lloris says Spurs do not have the same calibre as their rivals in the Champions League, but he says the whole squad is ready to use their recent experience in order to win a trophy.

“I think with a lot of humility there are some clubs that have the profile to win Champions League every season – historically and with the talent they have in the squad,” Lloris told reporters.

“They put a stamp on this competition. That’s not the case for Tottenham. But as we saw last year, everything is possible if you have the belief, the talent and the discipline.

Why not be back again? “It’s not a coincidence. We’re doing something well; we’re building something strong. But we cannot drop the level. We need to build the consistency to improve, to get even closer to what we are all looking for – trophies.”

Tottenham have been drawn against Red Star Belgrade, Bayern Munich and Olympiakos this season in Group B. They will travel to Greece on Wednesday night, and Pochettino will be without two defenders.

Danny Rose and Serge Aurier have been rested and have not travelled, while Ryan Sessegnon, Giovani Lo Celso and Juan Foyth remain injured.
