Longstaff Determined To Overcome Injury Battle

Newcastle United midfielder Scott Longstaff says his recovery from a knee injury has been both mentally and physically draining. Longstaff burst onto the scene last season and he made 13 appearances in all competitions, also netting on two occasions.

The 21-year-old was nominated for the Premier League’s Player of the Month in February but he then suffered a season-ending injury in March. After his initial phase of recovery, Longstaff has since resumed light running and ball work and he can now finally see light at the end of the tunnel after a gruelling few months.

He told NUFC TV: “It’s tough being out for so long – it’s my first proper injury and on the back of probably the best two months of my life so far, to have it taken away was pretty horrible to be honest. “But you’ve got to get your head around it as quickly as possible and start setting yourself little targets.

Now I’ve hit one of them – I’m back running and kicking a ball – and it’s given me a little bit more confidence to know it’s alright and it’s healing as it should be. It’s a mental thing. It doesn’t matter who you are, you’re always going to have the negative thoughts at the back of your mind, so for me it’s about trying to stay as positive as possible.”
