Burnley defender Matt Lowton has urged his side to take advantage of Wolves’ recent European exploits when they meet on Sunday. The Clarets will travel to Molineux for the third game of the new Premier League campaign, and Sean Dyche’s side will be looking to move into the top 10 with a victory.
They face a tough afternoon at the office with Wolves unbeaten since the end of last season. Nuno Espirito Santo’s men have endured a decent summer so far as they prepare to try and qualify for the Europa League group stages.
Crusaders and Pyunik have not been able to stop them, while they will take a 3-2 advantage into the second leg against Torino this week.
While Wolves look like they can compete in the Europa League, Burnley know how costly it can be to try and compete in two competitions.
Dyche’s men failed to reach the group stages 12 months ago, while they also found themselves in a relegation battle for the majority of the campaign.
A strong run of results after Christmas eventually spared Burnley’s blushes, but Lowton is confident his team’s experience will stand them in good stead.
Sunday’s game comes just three days after Wolves last played and the likes of Raul Jimenez, Diogo Jota, Joao Moutinho, Conor Coady and Willy Boly all started in Turin.
Lowton was part of the Burnley side that lost 2-1 to Arsenal last time out, but is confident his team can capitalise on Wolves’ busy schedule.
He told the Burnley official website: “It’s difficult with the Europa League, which we experienced last year. You can’t quite train as hard as you’d like in between and do the things we’ve been able to do this year without the Europa League. “But it’s up to us to make sure we start right and get on the front foot and not let them bed themselves into the game and get some momentum.”
Burnley have not won at Molineux since 2013 when both clubs were still playing in the Championship.
Dyche has confirmed that this weekend’s game comes too soon for Danny Drinkwater, even though he played 45 minutes for the club’s Under-23 side.
Robbie Brady and Steven Defour remain sidelined as Burnley prepare to play their second away game in a row.
After their meeting with Wolves, Burnley then host Sunderland in the Carabao Cup before facing European champions Liverpool at Turf Moor.
