Chelsea are reportedly set to open contract talks with defender David Luiz, whose current deal is due to expire next summer. The Brazil international is in his second spell at Stamford Bridge, having returned to the club from Paris Saint-Germain in 2016, but his stay in west London seemed to be coming to an end last season as injury and falling out of favour with former boss Antonio Conte saw him limited to just nine Premier League starts.
However, new Blues boss Maurizio Sarri has restored the 31-year-old to his starting line-up and he has been an ever-present as Chelsea have made a perfect start to the new season, securing five wins from five in the Premier League.
Luiz now looks set to be offered a new contract and Chelsea will be keen to conclude negotiations before the January transfer window opens as, if they don’t, the defender would be free to talk to other clubs based outside the Premier League.
Luiz has made 129 league appearances across his two spells with Chelsea, while he has also helped the club win three major trophies during that time.
