Magpies Boosted By Bruce – Shelvey

Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey insists the squad are already feeling the benefits of having Steve Bruce on board. The Magpies appointed Bruce as their new manager on Wednesday after failing to agree a new deal with former boss Rafael Benitez.

Shortly after taking charge, Bruce travelled out to China to link up with the squad on their pre-season tour of Asia. Due to visa issues he was not allowed to be on the touchline for Saturday’s Premier League Asia Trophy victory over West Ham but he watched his men from the stands.

Shelvey, who fell out of favour with Benitez, says he prefers Bruce’s managerial style and has hailed the former Sheffield Wednesday boss after just a couple of days on the training pitches.

“He is a lot different to Rafa,” Shelvey told Sky Sports. “With Rafa, you never knew what he was thinking. Personally, I would rather have someone who talks to you and you know what they are thinking. “Steve has come in and changed the formation, and after two days we looked a lot more comfortable.

I think we thoroughly deserved to win. “When a new manager comes in training goes up a couple of notches and everyone is busy and looking to impress. “He has made a massive difference. He is constantly talking to you and that is what you want.”
