Manchester United 1-2 Crystal Palace

Marcus Rashford missed a second-half penalty as Manchester United slumped to a shock 2-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace. Rashford’s failure to score his penalty came just five days after Paul Pogba had been criticised for missing his spot-kick against Wolves.

Scott McTominay headed an early Luke Shaw corner wide and, as United dominated the early exchanges, Rashford dragged a left-footed shot off target.
Rashford then fired a 30-yard shot wide before Daniel James saw his effort cleared off the line by Patrick Van Aanholt.

It seemed only a matter of time until United broke the deadlock but, after another Rashford free-kick had drifted over the bar, the Eagles broke the deadlock with their first meaningful attack of the match, Jordan Ayew beating David De Gea in the 32nd minute after Jeffrey Schlupp had flicked on Vicente Guaita’s long ball forward.

Ashley Young went close to grabbing an immediate equaliser for United when he fired a low shot wide while Pogba curled a 20-yard free-kick over the bar.

Young was at the forefront of another United attack soon after the restart but, when his cross found James, Van Aanholt was on hand to block the former Swansea City’s man shot.

Young then sent a volley over the bar before United were awarded a penalty in the 68th minute when Luka Milivojevic tripped McTominay only for Rashford to hit the post with his spot-kick.

Pogba flicked a late effort over the bar and McTominay fired a long-range shot wide before James grabbed an 89th-minute equaliser, curling his shot past Guaita after great play by Anthony Martial and Rashford.

However, there was still time for Roy Hodgson’s team to nab a stoppage-time winner, Wilfried Zaha finding Van Aanholt who sent the away fans into ecstasy by firing his shot home at the near post.
