Marlon Dedicates Thunderous Strike To Unborn Baby

Marlon dedicated his first Sassuolo goal to his family and friends in Brazil but regretted that it was not enough to beat Bologna. The 23-year-old central defender, signed permanently for 6m euros from Barcelona in the summer, slammed in a stunning 25-yard effort to level matters on Sunday in a match which finished 2-2.

It was not only the player’s first Serie A goal but also his first in over 60 professional appearances in Europe across leagues in Spain, France and Italy.

“I am proud of this goal,” he said later. “I dedicate it to my wife and my baby who will arrive in December, and also to all my people in Brazil, but there are really too many dedications that I would like to make.

Marlon admitted Sassuolo coach Roberto De Zerbi asks him to focus on defending, but revealed his natural instinct is to attack when the chance is there.

“Every day asks me to be more attentive to the defensive phase,” he added. “I like to play offensively and the coach gives me the license to.

“I’m sorry for the final draw because we played well and did everything we said with the coach, but the football is made up of episodes: I’m happy for the goal but also a bit sad for the lack of victory.”
