Ryan Mason has returned to Tottenham after taking up a full-time coaching role within the club’s academy. The former England international came through the ranks with Spurs and went on to make 70 appearances for the club, 53 of which came in the Premier League before he left for Hull in 2016.
With the Tigers, Mason suffered a serious head injury that eventually forced him to retire from playing last year. Since announcing his retirement, the 28-year-old has been working on a temporary basis within the Spurs academy, while also earning his coaching badges.

He has now taken up a full-time position and will work primarily with the club’s Under-19 UEFA Youth League side. Mason is not the only new full-time arrival in the academy set-up as former Portsmouth, Bolton and West Ham player Matt Taylor has been named the club’s new Under-18s coach, while ex-Watford defender Nigel Gibbs has joined as assistant head of player development.
Existing coaches Chris Riley and Troy Archibald-Henville have also been handed revised roles within the set-up. Head of academy coaching and player development John McDermott believes all five men will prove to be assets to the academy.
McDermott told the club website: “All five of these members of staff understand the incredible standards set for young and senior players at this club and they will be invaluable in driving our players to become the best young men and players that they can be.”
