McDonald Replaces Lewis For Solheim Cup

McDonald Replaces Lewis For Solheim Cup

Stacy Lewis has been forced to withdraw from Team USA for this week’s Solheim Cup due to a back injury with Ally McDonald replacing her. The 34-year-old has been having treatment on the issue for the last two weeks since the problem flared up at the Cambia Portland Classic and had initially been passed fit to play.

However, the former world No.1 will now have to sit out what would have been her sixth Solheim Cup after she re-injured her back during the opening day of practice at Gleneagles. US skipper Juli Inkster has turned to McDonald to fill the void left by two-time major winner Lewis, who was consoled by her replacement when leaving the course in tears after ending her round early.

Inkster admits its a blow to lose someone of Lewis’ experience with McDonald the sixth rookie on her team, but is confident the 26-year-old can step up to the plate. “Stacy is one of the fiercest competitors I have ever met. I know this was an incredibly tough decision for her, but she also has the team’s best interests at heart,” said Inkster.

“Stacy will stay with Team USA over the next week and will still be an incredible asset to our crew. But when I had to choose an alternate, I knew Ally would be able to step up for the challenge. She’s got a cool head but a fiery spirit. I know she’ll bring her best to Team USA.”
